It used to be that any website would do. The market was sparsely crowded and a website (no matter how bad or poor the web development was) would be good enough. Those days are gone. The lay out, colors, fonts and images you use (or don’t use) can mark the difference between success and failure. If you’ve come to this realization and would like a few tips to guide you in improving your web design, follow the simple tips below.

  1. Have a professional logo designed and feature it prominently on your page. It should be a high-resolution image and should reside in the upper left corner of every page on your site. For an added bonus, link the logo back to the home page so that when it’s clicked, visitors can easily get back to where they started.
  2. Make navigation intuitive. Visitors should not have to guess or hunt to find your navigation menus. Feature them in such a way that makes them easy to find and use.
  3. Cut the clutter. There’s a ton of things you could do to add flash and pizzazz to your website, but that doesn’t mean you should. Utilize short paragraphs and clean lines to direct your visitors attention to the most important information on the site.
  4. Make the site spacious and comfortable to peruse. Have some space between text and images so that the visitor has some room to breathe as they navigate the site.
  5. Use color strategy. Utilizing a neutral color palette can project an elegant, understated strong and modern appearance to the visitor. Make sure that they are in congruence with the rest of your marketing materials in order to maintain a consistent brand.
  6. Use real, quality photographs. Stock photos are bland and generic; do you want your customers to feel the same way about your company? Invest in good professional photography
  7. Choose fonts that are easy to read on multiple devices and browsers. There’s no reason to use any less than an 11pt font. Visitors should be able to read the site easily and clearly.
  8. Make every page as a landing page. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. So make sure that regardless of how your visitor finds your site that he is bound to be attracted to it.
  9. Respect the fold. If people have to scroll to find your offer, you risk losing some to impatience. Put your call to action and contact information on the upper portion of the page so as to maximize every opportunity.
  10. Make sure you have a mobile site to complement the full one. You want to reach every visitor in every situation possible.
